A wildly convincing fan theory suggests that Mr Bean is in fact an alien.
The live-action Mr Bean TV series follows the exploits of the title character, described by actor Rowan Atkinson as “a child in a grown man’s body”, in finding bizarre solutions to problems presented by everyday tasks, and he often causes those around him a lot of mayhem in the process.
At the start of each episode, against the backdrop of St Paul’s Cathedral, a bright light appears on the ground and it grows larger and larger until it stops, then Mr Bean falls from the sky. This could easily suggest that he is an alien being beamed down from a UFO. You could argue that he was merely abducted and is being returned to Earth by his alien captors. However, at the end of episodes 3 and 6, he is shown being sucked back up into the night sky. Why would the aliens abduct him again if he is a human? He could be a multiple abductee, but it seems more plausible that he is an alien returning to his mother-craft.
As many fans theorise, maybe Mr Bean’s fellow aliens sent him down to earth for social experiments. This would explain why he always gets into sticky situations and why he seems so lost as to how to behave in a civilised, human way. He is learning about human behaviour and his eccentric behaviour is the result of him struggling to integrate with our customs and norms. It would also explain why he wears the same clothes all the time, he has no real sense of how humans dress.
If he is indeed an alien, it would also explain why he does not get on well with electrical equipment. For instance, in one episode his hands become magnetised and, consequently, he accidentally causes a lady’s dress to shoot upwards over her head.
Additionally, in episode ‘Room 426’, he checks into a hotel and has to fill in a form. There is a brief moment where he forgets his nationality, so he copies the guy next to him and mutters “British”. Could an adult human really forget his own nationality?
There also seems to be some major support for this theory from the animated series of Mr Bean. It seems that he is confirmed to be an alien in the episode ‘Double Trouble’, the last episode of the animated show. In this episode, it is shown that a UFO full of Mr Bean aliens/clones dropped Mr Bean down to planet Earth many years ago. They eventually reunite with him but choose to let him stay on Earth when they see that his girlfriend Irma Gobb looks sad without him. As they leave, they erase Irma’s memory and Bean vows to meet them again in the future.
On the other hand, the alien theory may be incorrect. Apparently, the whole intro thing where Bean is thrown to the ground from a beam of light was intended by the producers to show Bean’s status as an “ordinary man cast into the spotlight”.
However, this doesn’t seem to hold with the other evidence, especially the animated series. It could be the case that the alien episode in the animated series is not canon, or it could have been a joke from the producers. But why would they show it? And why show Bean being sucked back up into the light in the live-action series? Perhaps the producers had planned for Bean to be an alien but chickened out at the last second?
Alternatively, maybe Bean was not alien but was just abducted by aliens, and rejected. This would explain why he has a somewhat harsh landing on the cobblestones.
To conclude, the fan theory asserting that Mr Bean is an alien probably has more truth in it than it’s creators intended, due to the the last episode of the animated series. Based on the evidence, it is more likely that he is an alien, or a multiple abductee, than not.
